History of Rosman Glendale Shelby County Golf Course

The grand opening of the Rosman-Glendale Golf Course, also known as the Shelby County Golf Course was Sunday, June 3, 1979.  Here is how it all began:

The estate of Clara, Alfred and  Alvin Rosman generously donated the original 40 acres of farmland to the Shelby County Conservation Board with a stipulation that the ground be developed into a public golf course for the enjoyment of all. An additional 35 acres was purchased by Shelby County from the Rosman family to provide adequate land for a nine hole golf course. Shelby County, with oversight by it's Conservation Board, continues to retain ownership of the property, The golf course property is leased to Shelby County Golf, Inc., a local non-profit organization, and it has responsibility for the maintenance and operation of the course. After the ground was prepared for development, the first grass was seeded in the Fall of 1977, and preparations continued for its grand opening.

The golf course eventually opened at the start of the 1979 season, with a par-35, 2,920 yard layout (it has since been changed to a par 36, 3,081 yard layout).  The initial rates for golf were $100.00 for a Family membership, $60.00 for a Single membership, and $50.00 for a Student membership.  Green fees for 18 holes of golf started at $3.00 on weekdays, $5.00 for weekends and holidays. The first Board of Directors for Shelby County Golf, Inc. was as follows:

  • Jerry Gaul, Earling

  • Joe Wehr, Westphalia

  • Neil Petsche, Portsmouth

  • Earl Powers, Defiance

  • Jim Burmeister, Harlan

Countryside Enterprises, Inc. was formed along side of Shelby County Golf, Inc. to take responsibility for building, maintaining, and governing the operation of the clubhouse. Season ticket-holders (members) were extended access to clubhouse facilities.  The clubhouse is 40′ x 75′ with a total capacity of 300.  The meeting area, also available for rent, holds 150. There is a lounge on the main level, with showers, dressing rooms and restrooms available on the lower level. Its first Board of Directors was as follows:

After more than 40 years of  governing clubhouse and cart shed operations, Countryside Enterprises accepted the offer from Shelby County Golf, Inc. to consolidate all clubhouse, cart shed, and golf course operations under Shelby County Golf, Inc.. This consolidation took place in January of 2020, and Countryside Enterprises, Inc. dissolved shortly afterwards.
